Somewhat in Fox's defense....but not quite May 10, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have been waiting a long time for these two films to be released on dvd, as I have only had the Prism Video release of Tales and the Nostalgia Merchant Video release of Vault. In Fox's defense (which for me is very rare because they have pi**ed me off with their constant rehashing and re-releasing of their titles) the version of Vault in this set IS the R-rated version, the SAME EXACT one on the Nostalgia Merchant release from the early 80's. NEITHER film is uncut....I have seen the original UK releases of both films and both are quite gory for the time they were released. Example 1: In the "Grimsdyke" story in TALES, there is a longer shot of the father screaming at the still beating heart of his son after he unwraps the paper, and Example 2: The vampire story in VAULT does NOT just cut to a still frame photo of Daniel Massey hanging upside down being used as a human keg and then back to Anna Massey being handed a glass of blood. In the original, she gets the blood first and THEN the cut to the human keg grimacing in pain as the tap is run. The Tom Baker story segment also has added bits of gore that are not in the US release. Fox seems to just have gone to the original US distributors of both films for the prints they used, instead of going to the UK house where the prints are stored. I'm just as pissed about Fox's treatment of the consumer as the rest of you, and their handling and release of these films does great injustice to Max Rosenberg, Milton Subotsky and AMICUS pictures in general. But even when the MIDNIGHT MOVIES marquee was distributed by MGM, they only used the release prints of some of the films. DERANGED was only available to them in the theatrical version released by American International. The director's cut version, which I have on VHS from Moore Video, is still currently unavailable even on VHS anymore.
I'm ready to kick the living crud out of my old lady! February 21, 2008 1 out of 20 found this review helpful
First, there is no Vault of Horror in this double feature. Second, Tales From the Crypt reminds me a great deal of falling into the well in the backyard: great and lugubrious fun. Peter Cushing is the highpoint of the flick, especially during takes when he's in the studio restroom lamenting over his acceptance of a clam bagel at a little shop in Pickadilly Circus. We know this because Roy Ward Baker has installed a small video camera in the paper towel holder. Ironically, Peter has also stashed his liquor in the same place and nearly comes to blows with old man Baker, who was at the time diddling Peter's mistress. But why go on about it when it can all be seen in the extras contained in this dvd? Search me. But dear God, Peter does hold forth. He talks on various unrelated subjects in what is purported to be a discussion on the infiltration of communism in present day London's vampire district. He drinks his port, he struts theatrically to and fro mugging for the camera, he inexplicably tosses cinders on the hardwood floor, he adjusts his satin ascot, he clucks, croons and flounders, but not once does he admit that he has compromised the entire production by sleeping with director, his nibs, Ian McHenry of Bluejay Way. I give this film two stars, one for each of Ingrid Pitt's cleavages in another movie: Countess Dracula.
So good stories and performances. January 21, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
So good stories at that year and remarkable performances by the artists. Even now, the horror, suspense and terror are present in every minute of these classic british films.
Would You Like A Bit Of Cheese To Go With Your "Whine"? January 20, 2008 3 out of 10 found this review helpful
All of these pathetic and ostensibly uninformed "Armchair Amateur" Film Critic's and "Rank-Egghead" Roger Ebert's who use an unregulated "public" platform to commit acts of "libel" and "defamation" against the DVD/Film Distributor Executive's, Engineer's, and Marketing Rep's who all worked very hard to bring films like these out of "the vault", and in essence, merely to "whine" about what they EXPECTED TO GET but feel that somehow they DID NOT GET from this very inexpensive, (albeit 50% "Edited For TV"), but extremely well packaged "TWO-FER DVD" set are in need of psycho analysis and possible incarceration! But they at least need to do these three things... Firstly, GET OVER IT! This set cost you anywhere from a miniscule $7.50 to buy USED, to a whopping $12 bucks to get a brand-spankin' NEW copy still unwrapped and virginal! So, be happy about what you DID GET, and "Cowboy Up" already! Secondly, if an "UNCUT" version of the "BONUS" feature included at no extra charge is so damned important to all continuing to WHINE about being "ripped-off" by the distributors, why don't you go pay $25-40 bucks for the U.K. version, and shell out another $100 bucks for a cheap "Region-Free" player, then just "Shut Up" already! And finally, we should all be grateful for what WE DID GET in this really great "TWO-FER DVD" set showcasing one of the very best and one of the truly "cheesiest" in a short-lived franchise of fantastic, frightening, and "FAB" films known to all of us here in "America", (where "natural-born" citizens allegedly have "rights" and "laws" to "protect" us from untrue, unwarranted, or unfounded acts of "slander" that may be viewed in any forum or form of "public"-ation!), and to our friends from "across the pond" who gave them to us many years ago as "Amicus Anthologies"... And I for one, cannot think of anything worth a "whine", and am grateful!
Joan Collins Cleans Up a Mess and Peter Cushing Gets Hate Mail January 15, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
It's great that Tales From the Crypt has been released on disc. I can finally get rid of my old vhs tape. The film is a fun anthology; my favorite deals with the kindly Peter Cushing and his cruel neighbor; then there's a Christmas Eve story featuring Joan Collins and a psycho on the loose; also, a man in an accident gets a rude awakening; and a bunch of blind men get some revenge. This one's lots of cheesy '60's fun. A fiendish favorite.
Now if only we could see a dvd release of Dr. Terror's House of Horrors!!!!!
