2 out of 5 stars Shame On 20th Century Fox   September 13, 2007

The only reason I gave this set 2 stars instead of 1 is that Tales from the Crypt is uncut and is a good print. The Vault of Horror is a cut print and as a previous reviewer said badly cut as well. In the segment "Midnight Mess" the blood on tap ending is edited to appear a few seconds before its original place in the segment and it's an obscured freeze frame instead of the blood pouring out of the tap as the body convulses. In "The Neat Job" the hammer to the head ending is also a freeze frame and missing the shot of the body sinking to the floor with the hammer stuck in the victim's head. Thankfuly I have an uncut, albeit fullframe, version of The Vault of Horror to watch but most people will never see this movie in its original form unless 20th Century Fox makes a corrected disc. *** Censored Scene Update: The hand chopping scene from the segment "Drawn & Quartered" is missing the scene where the victim raises his dismembered hands and screams. Regarding the reviewer who says that people who complain about the cuts are "whiners" and should "get over it" regarding "a few seconds of gore" being trimmed I say: I don't buy DVDs for edited films. If I wanted edited films I could record them off commercial television.

I love Tales from the Crypt, and after seeing The Vault of Horror, love this set. Despite very few special features (just a trailer), this 2-Disc set is a godsend for me because I've been wanting to see VoH, but couldn't find it.

Anyway, these films actually pre-date the popular TV series. Created by Amicus Productions (famous for other horror anthologies like Torture Gardens and Asylum), each film consists of 5 well-down adaptations of stories from the pages of EC Comics' horror series.

My only gripe? MONO SOUND! Seriously. Didn't Fox realize that televisions are now capable of at least TWO audio channels? This doesn't affect the actual product or the films themselves.

3 out of 5 stars What's The Point...   September 12, 2007

...of releasing Vault in a badly cut form? I've already received my discs and, for the price, the set is worth it for Tales (which is uncut and in great shape), so I won't be returning it. So, I do recommend buying the set for this film. However, it is inexcusable that Fox would release Vault it a censored version. Really, what is the point? The cuts are "brutal", in that they are really ragged looking freeze frames and the actual violence is mild compared to the normal fare seen on the screens these days.

This really speaks more for sloppiness than anything else. The uncut version is available; Fox just didn't take the time to use it. This has happened in the past with the Midnight Movie collection (Deranged comes to mind) but, again, the method of cutting is so bad - and the "gruesome" scenes the payoff for each story - that the film loses much of its enjoyment factor.

5 out of 5 stars waiting...waiting...it's here   September 12, 2007
David Segoviano (Torrance, CA USA)
That was my reaction to the last couple of years I had to wait for this to be released on DVD. I saw tales from the crypt a little before 2002 and was amazed at how I didn't get bored or lost interest throughout the movie. This Movie is very entertaining, the stories are dark and creepy and they don't come close to being cheesy, bad acted or boring.TFTC is my second favorite anthology horror film(My top favorite is creepshow) Vault of Horror on the other hand, which comes with the double feature, is something I have not seen but looks interesting and hope it turns out to be as good as TFTC.

Overall this is a great set at a great price and if anyone hasn,t seen TFTC you should take a look it's definitely worth seeing over any other horror films made lately.

1 out of 5 stars ALERT! VAULT OF HORROR IS CUT!!   September 5, 2007

Now that the first reviews of the product are coming in it is clear that Vault of Horror is severely cut. It seems it is the tv version that has been released which uses freeze frames at crucial moments - whether this was an intentional move by Fox or a blunder is not known. Censorship of this nature ruins the entire purpose of the movie.

I'd advise people to cancel orders if it's not too late.

Sadly, my disc has already been mailed!

UPDATE: Having now received the film and checked Vault of Horror out I can confirm that it is a terrible viewer-unfriendly version. The cuts are worse than anticipated. The final sequence in the opening story not only uses a still shot but crucial detail involving a tap has been blacked out! A large ink blot has been painted over the tap inserted in the victim's neck! Where did Fox get this print from?

Vault of Horror desperately requires a re release with the footage reinstated.

On the plus side Tales from the Crypt is uncut and includes a brief gore scene that I have never seen in all previous viewings of the film.
