Dracula February 5, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the quintessential Hammer Horror movie. And this is the greatest Dracula movie of the series, Christopher Lee is magnificent here and definitely Dracula's never looked so terrifying and gruesome! Recently hearing that Hammer Horror Productions have started up again i am exited to bits..but whether or not they could ever create something like this again is hard to imagine.Times have certainly changed and what you have here is a horror film from the golden age of British cinema.rarely does a film so much these days captivate a sheer undergoing of things that go bump in the night to such dramatic effect. As the steering protagonist and nemises of Christopher Lee's Dracula is 'Doctor Van Helsing' Played by none other than Peter Cushing. Who plays again in this role as a perfect counter part to Lee's shadowly stranger of the night.Peter embodies every bit into his role as the the opposition serving for the light in the darkness of this ungoing battle between good and evil. I picked this up recently, and thought to myself is this going to be as good as it was as a child? Had it lost it's lustre and worn with time? Not atall, surprisingly! The music and the two main leading men hold it togeather perfectly and still works in truly horrorfying effect. Thats why they call these classics.
Pros- Brilliant Acting, Scares, music on screen performances by counterparts.
Cons- ???! They should have been given oscars for this! Horror deserves more.
....AND THE WINNER IS..... LUGOSI BY A NOSE! January 9, 2008 15 out of 18 found this review helpful
I have always been a classic Universal horror films fan and was never that big a fan of the Hammer interpretations. This was because of my loyal devotion to the original classic Universal films. If you compare the Hammer films to the true classic Universal films then I would say they pale by comparison. Unfortunately the classic films were replaced with some rather cheaply made quickies in the 40's and 50's. Even though these cheaper films may hold fond memories for those who grew up with them, it is easy to see that these Hammer films were a much needed improvement. The biggest factor was they were shot in glorious color! I know...I know....Color? I love the old black and Whites as they have an unsurpassed creepiness. Now that so much time has gone by, I thought I would give Hammer another try. I started with Hammer's breakthrough film "The Curse Of Frankenstein" and then to the film in this review "Horror Of Dracula" This film is very good, but I must admit that I prefer Lugosi. Lee is more menacing with his sheer size, blood shot eyes and bloody fangs but, Lugosi is more subtle and eerie. Over all this is a very good horror film with great actors, sets and a restored passion to a dying genre...at the time. The DVD transfer looks very good but has minimal extras.....too bad!
One of the best! January 4, 2008 One of the best Dracula movies, the acting was great. Great creepy Horror film, amazing atmosphere and scenery too.
Christopher Lee as Dracula, Peter Cushing as Van Helsing, 'nuff said November 28, 2007 This movie has an excellent cast of background characters, but in the end it is totally dominated by Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. Hammer films had a wonderful stable of outstanding "character" actors and Dracula films from the days of Bela Lugosi have always given ample opportunity for these people to strut their stuff in between the action scenes, but all these parts, in this movie, simply worked as backdrop to the main line, which is the duel to the (final)death between Dracula and Van helsing. It is interesting to note that Cushing and Lee seldom appear on the screen together until the final scene, but the whole movie plot consists of Van Helsing tracking down and ultimately destroying Dracula. To Bram Stokers readers, the film, like all movie versions, is flawed. Hammer films made very little attempt to follow the story as told in the book, many characters were totally deleted, and the setting was moved from England to Germany. The divergances were so many that to set them all down would require a book nearly as long as the original novel. But, by itself, the movie stands up as a fast moving, well scripted, beautifully designed and well photographed yarn. Enjoy it for itself and read the book as an entirely diffrerent story about an entirely different group of people who only shared a few names in common with the people in the movie.
The Very Best Hammer Film November 14, 2007 the best Hammer film ever, Christopher Lee's best Dracula, a beatiful print, so,
WHY NO COMMENTARY OR ONE SINGLE BLOODY WORTHWHILE EXTRA???
