Product Description
It's not always the dog that needs a lesson in good manners. As etiquette and pet expert Charlotte Reed shows, well-mannered people and their well-mannered pets are more pleasant to be around, are treated better by everyone, and get invited to more places, including restaurants, parties, and vacation homes. In her complete guide to dog decorum, she discusses acceptable behavior for every occasion in a dog's life, including:
  • Behaving at home and on the street
  • Eating in or going out
  • Extending pet courtesy to others in places of business
  • Being mindful of others while traveling
  • Having fun at pet events
  • Treating veterinarians, pet sitters, and dog groomers with respect.
With Reed's tips, you'll become a model pet owner, a good neighbor, an excellent customer, an exceptional host, and a welcome guest at the homes of friends and family. Both practical and fun, with real-life stories and expert training tips, The Miss Fido Manners Complete Book of Dog Etiquette is the only book you and your dog need.

2 out of 5 stars Too Much "Miss" Information   February 6, 2008

While Charlotte Reed's book "The Miss Fido Manners Complete Book of Dog Etiquette" does share some good tips, this book has more wrong than right. It seems to me that this book is geared mainly for the East Coast elite, which is fine, but does not make it a book for the general dog owner population. For instance, I have to wonder how many dog owners get invited to Tea Parties with/for their dog. In Ms. Reed's section on walking the streets and dog parks, she suggests using a retractable leash or a 6 foot leash. Neither of these can be totally effective for maintaining control of your dog if he/she sees something to go after or gets into something he/she shouldn't. There is never any mention about using harnesses on the dog instead of collars, especially for walking. Many breeds, especially toy breeds should never be walked on a collar and a harness is much safer and more comfortable for any dog. It is true that Vet schools offer good vet care for animal clients at a somewhat reduced rate than most private vet practices, but generally speaking shelters do not offer any vet service other that spaying or neutering,as Ms. Reed states. I work with rescue groups all over the country, and have yet to find a shelter that offers a wide variety of medical services. Some ASPCA organizations do, however.

I do like the fact that Ms. Reed states in her book that there is never a good reason for dogs to be kept outside and away from the family. I would have liked to see her talk more about positive training, when dealing with behavior issues.

In short, I would not recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS BOOK!!!   July 30, 2007

This beautifully designed book is a MUST HAVE for all dog owners. I'm sending one to my parents and my brother immediately. The most striking thing about it is the respect Charlotte Reed has for everyone dealing with dogs and of course for the dogs themselves. Very touching.

I have seen Charlotte on numerous morning shows discussing a wide variety
of pet topics and have always been impressed. I read her book from cover to cover and thoroughly enjoyed the anecdotes which were right on the money and made the book user friendly. It far surpassed other training books I've read and will certainly reccommend it to my clients!

If your life includes a furry friend then Miss Fido Manners Complete Book of Dog Etiquette is a book you'll want to add this to your collection--especially in today's complex world of inter-species soirées.

In my opinion, mannered mutts rule while the others simply drool.

So, if you hate when dogs jump on people only to hear, "Oh! its okay"--when you know it isn't--you'll find this book a great reference tool.

In addition to short tips and snippets of information, you'll find product recommendations and useful website links.

Some of the topics you will find are home and office manners, proper child and neighbor relations, street smarts, restaurant rules, parties and gifts, pet professional protocols, and more.

Make sure you raise a sophisti-pet by using some of the newest tips and hints in books such as this one...and if you have someone who has a delinquent dog it makes the perfect gift!
