I ran onto LCK first book (A Nose For Murder) in a Thrift Shop and had it for awhile and one day in December decided to read it for something different and was pleasantly surprised. Our library doesn't carry any of LCK's book which I was disappointed but found the rest of the books on Amazon and bought them all including Bark M For Murder. I have really enjoyed the entire series and know this last book was difficult for Mr Kelley as he had just lost his 15 year old buddy and friend (Fred). This book tied up some characters that had been in the books from the beginning. I don't know if that means this is the last book but I hope not. I was sad at the death at one of the characters who was getting his life together. I love the relationship between Jck and Jamie and that Jack is really just a softie though gives that hard nosed attitude at times. A guy who rescued a Black kid (after his family is murdered)and fostered him and a guy who cries when his attorney dies. I liked the fact that MR K is not afraid to have his hero cry. The humor in the series is delightful. I laugh at Jack's light bulb jokes. In Twas the Bite Before Christmas I laughed so hard at Jack telling about his imitation of a Lizard I think it was. In this book as well as the rest there is a good mystery, a little romance, great humor and of course all the dog training tips. These have just been fun books to read and hope there will be more.

Like a Dog With a Bone
I am an animal lover who reads a lot. I "discoverd" Lee Charles Kelly in a used book store. When I started reading his first book, I could not put it down and have purchased all his dog mysteries. His character is witty, intelligent and the plots are intricate and unpredictable. Kelly brings his dogs to life with humor and soul. I have applied his training techniques to my own spoiled rascals with success. Kelly also itnroduced me to Miles Van Zandt - what a boon! I am looking forward to his next book.

Jack Field is an ex-cop, married to Dr. Jamie Cutter, the Chief Medical Examiner. An interesting combination when the ex-cop is also a dog trainer still attempting to solve crimes in which his wife is examining some of the victims. Sound involved? Well, it is!
Retired General Lamar MacLeary has a very disobedient dog for which he needs someone to train this digging monster. When the "digging" turns out to be human bones being unearthed, Jack has a mystery on his hands and this is right up his alley. When the bones are thought to be from the General's dead wife, everything gets quite interesting. From this point, many characters are introduced into the book and the story, while keeping a storyline that is fairly interesting, does get bogged down due to the many involved.
The general is in a coma that actually keeps him safe from those that would hurt him, or kill him. Jack and some friends, some law enforcement, and some animal handlers, take on this case and several other cases that are intertwined. I felt the story could have been a lot better without so many diversified characters trying to do too much. I love dogs and most other animals, so the animal incidents I enjoyed very much, but the story eventually ends with satisfaction. That is if the reader can remember who is who, and what they are doing, in the book.
The book is readable but not one I would recommend as a top read.

Just back from his honeymoon in Mexico, kennel owner Jack Field finds himself involved in another murder mystery as he simply tries to do a good deed and check in on a retired general and his dog who has a digging problem at the request of the general's daughter. But the dog has dug up a bone that belongs to a body, the body of the general's wife who supposedly ran off to Mexico twenty years ago. Suddenly government types are tailing Jack and bombs are exploding and one of his employees goes AWOL as Jack finds himself trying to uncover a U.S. Government conspiracy and the murderer before he becomes the next victim.
**** This was an interesting whodunit involving government conspiracy theories that is well written with humor and candor. It is a good read for dog lovers with interesting dog training theories though there are quite a few characters in the story to keep up with which hinders the reading a bit. ****

This book is a nice blend of suspense, mystery, and dog lore. I especially like the way Kelley integrates his theories of dog traing into the story itself, So many of the so-called "dog mysteries" are stories that feature a dog and otherwise have nothing to do with dogs. There is also a good deal of narrative detail that,although sometimes slowing the narrative drive,is often interesting. Secondary characters are developed well and appear as real people rather than props for plot development. All in all the book is an enjoyable reading experience that readers of Conant,Berenson,Benjamin,et al will enjoy.
